Shannon Tasei: Research Idea

For my research paper, I am interested in exploring the idea of collaborative art on the web. In particular, the reemergence of the concept of "The Exquisite Corpse" in digital media. "The Exquisite Corpse" was a parlor game created in the 1920's by Surrealist artists, where a group of artists would collaborate on a drawing; each contributing blindly to an allocated area of a portrait, not knowing what others had drawn. The end result is a work creating by many, consisting of varying elements and styles.

Today, the structure of the web allows this idea to resurface with innovative and interesting media projects. A few specific sites that have peaked my interest are: wetellstories.co.uk (where many authors contribute to a work of fiction, creating a non-linear narrative), massanimation.com (a project that combines the collaborative animations of over 50,00 of people) and twistori.com (an interactive, stream of consciousness narrative/poem).
